Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Nuclear Antigen IgG Test
Confirm past EBV infection with a single antibody test.
The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Nuclear Antigen IgG Test is a single antibody blood test used to determine whether you have had a past infection with the Epstein-Barr virus. EBV is a very common virus, with most people infected at some point in their lives, often during childhood or adolescence. While many infections cause few or no symptoms, EBV is the primary cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever) and has been linked to a range of other conditions. This test is typically requested when a clinician needs to clarify your EBV status, for example to distinguish a past infection from a current or recent one, or to investigate persistent or unusual symptoms.
What this test measures
- Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Nuclear Antigen IgG: This antibody is directed against the EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA-1), a protein that appears only after the virus has established a latent infection. A positive result generally indicates that you were infected with EBV in the past, usually more than six to eight weeks ago. It is a key marker for confirming past infection and is often used alongside other EBV antibodies (such as VCA IgM and VCA IgG) to build a complete picture of the infection timeline.
Why it matters
Knowing your EBV status can help your doctor interpret your symptoms correctly, rule out other causes, and decide whether further investigation or monitoring is needed. A positive EBV Nuclear Antigen IgG result provides reassurance that you have had a past infection and are very unlikely to be in the acute phase. A negative result may suggest that you have never been infected, or that the infection is too recent for this antibody to have developed yet. This information is valuable for guiding clinical decisions, particularly when symptoms are persistent or atypical, and for understanding your overall health picture.
