Brucella IgM Antibody Test
Detect acute brucellosis before it becomes chronic.
Brucella IgM Antibody Test is used to detect recent or acute infection with Brucella species, the bacteria responsible for brucellosis. This test is particularly useful for individuals who have been exposed to livestock, consumed unpasteurised dairy products, or travelled to regions where brucellosis is endemic. It is also valuable for laboratory workers and veterinarians who may have occupational exposure.
The test works by detecting IgM antibodies, which are typically the first antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a Brucella infection. The presence of IgM antibodies suggests a recent or acute infection. The analytical method used is typically enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay techniques.

Why it matters
Brucellosis can present with non-specific symptoms such as fever, sweats, malaise, and joint pain, making it difficult to diagnose clinically. Early detection of IgM antibodies allows for timely treatment, which can prevent complications such as chronic infection, arthritis, or endocarditis. This test provides critical information for patients with compatible symptoms and a history of exposure, enabling healthcare providers to initiate appropriate antibiotic therapy and reduce the risk of long-term sequelae.
