Bartonella (Cat Scratch) IgG Antibody Test
Uncover past Bartonella exposure behind lingering symptoms.
The Bartonella (Cat Scratch) IgG Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Bartonella bacteria, most commonly Bartonella henselae, the organism responsible for cat scratch disease. This test is typically requested for patients who present with unexplained lymph node swelling, persistent fever, fatigue, or a history of a cat scratch or bite, and for those in whom a chronic or atypical infection is being considered. It is also useful when evaluating patients with occupational or recreational exposure to cats, fleas, or other potential vectors.
The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) method to measure IgG antibodies, which indicate past or ongoing exposure to Bartonella. Because IgG antibodies can persist for months or years after initial infection, a positive result does not always mean active disease; it must be interpreted alongside clinical history and other findings. In some cases, paired acute and convalescent samples may be recommended to look for a rise in antibody levels.
Why it matters
Bartonella infections can be challenging to diagnose because symptoms are often non-specific and can mimic other conditions. Identifying Bartonella antibodies provides valuable evidence that can guide further investigation and management, particularly when a patient has a compatible clinical picture. Early recognition can help avoid unnecessary tests and support appropriate discussions with your doctor about whether treatment or additional monitoring is needed.
