Echinococcus (Hydatid Disease) Antibody Test
Detect silent hydatid infection before complications arise.
Echinococcus (hydatid disease) is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus tapeworms, most commonly Echinococcus granulosus. Humans become infected by accidentally ingesting eggs from contaminated soil, water, or food, or through close contact with infected dogs. The larvae form slow-growing cysts (hydatid cysts) most often in the liver and lungs, but they can also develop in other organs such as the brain, kidneys, or bones. This antibody test is used to support the diagnosis of hydatid disease when clinical signs, imaging findings, or a relevant exposure history raise suspicion. It is also helpful for monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrence after surgery or drug therapy.
This test is suitable for:
- Individuals with symptoms or imaging findings suggestive of hydatid cysts (e.g. abdominal pain, cough, chest pain, or incidental liver or lung cysts).
- People with a history of travel to or residence in regions where Echinococcus is endemic, including parts of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Asia.
- Patients with occupational or recreational exposure to sheep, cattle, or dogs in rural farming communities.
- Patients undergoing follow-up after treatment for confirmed hydatid disease.
Biomarkers included
Parasitic infection
- Echinococcus (Hydatid Disease) Antibody Test: Detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Echinococcus infection. A positive result supports the diagnosis of hydatid disease, while a negative result may help rule it out in low-risk individuals. Results should always be interpreted alongside clinical history, imaging, and other investigations.
Why it matters
Hydatid disease can remain silent for years while cysts slowly enlarge, leading to serious complications such as cyst rupture, secondary infection, or organ damage. Early detection through antibody testing, combined with imaging, allows timely treatment and reduces the risk of life-threatening outcomes. This test provides a valuable, non-invasive tool to support diagnosis, guide management, and monitor for recurrence, giving patients and clinicians clearer direction for care.
