Waaler-Rose Rheumatoid Factor Test
Clarify whether rheumatoid factor is driving your joint symptoms.
The Waaler-Rose Rheumatoid Factor Test is a blood test used to detect and measure rheumatoid factor (RF), an antibody that is often present in people with rheumatoid arthritis and certain other autoimmune conditions. It is most useful when you have persistent joint pain, swelling, or stiffness, and your doctor wants to investigate whether an autoimmune process such as rheumatoid arthritis may be involved. It can also help support the assessment of other conditions associated with RF, including some infections and inflammatory disorders.
What it screens for
- Rheumatoid factor (Waaler-Rose): This test looks for the presence and level of rheumatoid factor in your blood. A positive result does not confirm rheumatoid arthritis on its own, but it can support the diagnosis when considered alongside your symptoms, physical examination, and other test results. A negative result does not exclude rheumatoid arthritis either, as a proportion of people with the condition do not have detectable RF.
Who it is for
This test may be appropriate if you have ongoing joint pain, morning stiffness, or swelling, particularly in the small joints of the hands and feet. It can also be requested as part of a broader investigation of autoimmune or inflammatory symptoms. Your doctor will interpret the result in the context of your clinical history and may arrange additional tests if needed.
Why it matters
Identifying rheumatoid factor can help your doctor build a clearer picture of what is causing your symptoms, guide further investigation, and support timely referral or treatment decisions. Early clarification of autoimmune joint disease allows for more targeted management and can help protect joint health over the longer term.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
