The Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity (UIBC) test measures the amount of transferrin in your blood that is not yet bound to iron. Transferrin is a protein that transports iron throughout the body. UIBC reflects the reserve capacity of this transport system and is used alongside other iron studies to assess your iron status. This test is for anyone experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency or overload, such as fatigue, weakness, or unexplained joint pain, and for those being monitored for conditions affecting iron metabolism.

What UIBC measures
- Unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC): the portion of transferrin that is not bound to iron, indicating the available binding sites for iron transport.

Why it matters
UIBC helps your doctor evaluate how well your body manages iron. A high UIBC can suggest iron deficiency, where the body produces more transferrin to capture scarce iron. A low UIBC may indicate iron overload or a condition where transferrin production is reduced. By understanding your UIBC, you and your clinician can gain clearer insight into your iron balance and take appropriate steps to protect your health.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
