The Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) test measures the activity of the G6PD enzyme in your red blood cells. This enzyme plays a vital role in protecting red blood cells from oxidative damage. When G6PD activity is low, red blood cells become vulnerable to breakdown (haemolysis) when exposed to certain triggers such as specific medications, infections, or fava beans. This test is particularly important for individuals with a family history of G6PD deficiency, those of Mediterranean, African, Middle Eastern, or Southeast Asian descent where the condition is more common, and anyone experiencing unexplained episodes of anaemia or jaundice after taking certain drugs or eating fava beans. It is also used to confirm a diagnosis before starting medications known to trigger haemolysis in deficient individuals, such as certain antimalarials, sulfonamides, and some antibiotics. The test is performed on a simple blood sample using a quantitative enzyme assay, which directly measures G6PD activity levels to determine whether you have normal, intermediate, or deficient enzyme activity.

What it screens for

  • G6PD enzyme activity: Measures the level of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in red blood cells to identify deficiency, which can lead to haemolytic anaemia when exposed to oxidative stressors.

Why it matters

Knowing your G6PD status empowers you and your doctor to make informed decisions about medications, foods, and lifestyle choices that could otherwise trigger dangerous red blood cell destruction. Early identification of G6PD deficiency allows for the avoidance of specific triggers, preventing episodes of haemolytic anaemia, jaundice, and related complications. This simple test provides clarity and peace of mind, particularly for individuals from higher-risk ethnic backgrounds or those with a family history of the condition.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
