Transferrin Saturation Blood Test
Reveal how effectively your body transports iron.
Transferrin saturation is a calculated percentage that reflects how much of your iron transport capacity is currently in use. It is a key marker for investigating iron status, particularly in the assessment of iron deficiency anaemia and iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis. This test is suitable for anyone experiencing symptoms of fatigue, weakness, or unexplained tiredness, or for those with a family history of iron disorders. It is also used to monitor response to iron supplementation or to screen for iron overload in individuals with certain risk factors.
Iron Transport
- Transferrin saturation (TSAT): the percentage of transferrin (the iron-carrying protein) that is bound with iron. A low saturation suggests iron deficiency, while a high saturation may indicate iron overload or increased iron availability.
Why it matters
Transferrin saturation provides a sensitive early indicator of iron imbalance. Unlike ferritin, which can be elevated in inflammation, transferrin saturation offers a direct view of iron supply to the bone marrow and helps distinguish between iron deficiency and other causes of anaemia. Detecting abnormalities early allows for timely intervention and appropriate management of iron-related conditions.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
