The TPHA Syphilis Blood Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect antibodies specific to Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. It is typically used as a confirmatory test following a reactive screening result, or to clarify a diagnosis when clinical signs or other test results are inconclusive. This test is suitable for anyone who has had a reactive non-treponemal screening test, has symptoms suggestive of syphilis, or requires confirmation of a past or present treponemal infection.

Marker included
- Treponema pallidum Haemagglutination (TPHA): Detects antibodies directed against Treponema pallidum. A reactive result indicates exposure to the bacterium and is used to confirm treponemal infection. Once positive, TPHA typically remains reactive for life, even after successful treatment, so it is not used alone to determine active infection or treatment response.

Why it matters
Syphilis can remain asymptomatic for years while causing progressive damage to the cardiovascular and nervous systems if left untreated. Accurate confirmation with TPHA allows prompt treatment, helps prevent onward transmission, and supports appropriate follow-up for you and your partners.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
