Toxoplasma gondii IgA Antibody Test
Clarify recent or reactivated Toxoplasma infection with confidence.
The Toxoplasma gondii IgA Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect IgA-class antibodies directed against the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is most often requested alongside IgG and IgM testing when there is a need to clarify the timing of infection, particularly in pregnant women, in individuals who are immunocompromised, or in those with unexplained lymphadenopathy or flu-like illness. Because IgA antibodies tend to appear and decline earlier than IgG, this marker can help distinguish a recently acquired infection from one that was acquired in the more distant past, and it can also support the identification of possible reactivation in vulnerable patient groups.
Biomarkers included
Toxoplasma Serology
- Toxoplasma gondii IgA antibody: Detects IgA-class antibodies against T. gondii, which may be useful in assessing recent or reactivated infection when interpreted alongside IgG and IgM results.
Who this test is for
- Pregnant women with a positive or equivocal Toxoplasma IgM result who need help dating the infection.
- Immunocompromised patients (for example, those receiving immunosuppressive therapy or with HIV) where reactivation is a clinical concern.
- Individuals with unexplained lymphadenopathy, fever, or flu-like symptoms where toxoplasmosis is part of the differential diagnosis.
- Clinicians who require additional serological information to interpret a complex or discordant Toxoplasma antibody profile.
A simple blood sample is collected by a trained phlebotomist, and results are reviewed by your doctor in the context of your clinical history and any other Toxoplasma tests performed.
Why it matters
Toxoplasmosis is usually mild in healthy adults, but the timing of infection matters greatly during pregnancy and in people with weakened immunity. Identifying recent or reactivated infection accurately helps guide appropriate clinical management, informs counselling, and supports timely decisions about monitoring or treatment. The IgA antibody marker adds a valuable layer of information when standard IgG and IgM results alone are difficult to interpret.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
