Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) Test
Reveal your body's true iron-carrying capacity.
The Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) test measures the amount of iron that can be transported in your blood. It is used to assess iron status and helps distinguish between different types of anaemia, such as iron deficiency anaemia and anaemia of chronic disease. This test is for anyone experiencing symptoms of fatigue, weakness, or pallor, or for those being monitored for iron-related disorders.
What is measured
- Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC): The maximum amount of iron that can bind to proteins in the blood, primarily transferrin.
Why it matters
TIBC provides valuable insight into how well your body manages iron. When combined with other iron tests, it helps your doctor determine whether your iron levels are too low, too high, or if there is an underlying condition affecting iron absorption and storage. Early detection can guide appropriate treatment and prevent complications.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
