The Thyroglobulin Blood Test measures the level of thyroglobulin (Tg) in the blood. Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by thyroid follicular cells, and it serves as a tumour marker for thyroid cancer. This test is primarily used to monitor treatment response and detect recurrence in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary and follicular). It is also used to assess the effectiveness of thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy. The test is not intended for initial diagnosis of thyroid cancer but is a valuable tool in post-treatment surveillance.
Biomarkers
- Thyroglobulin (Tg): A protein produced by the thyroid gland. Elevated levels may indicate residual thyroid tissue, benign conditions, or persistent/recurrent thyroid cancer. In patients who have undergone total thyroidectomy, Tg levels should be very low or undetectable; any rise may suggest cancer recurrence.
