Iodine (Blood/Serum) Test
Uncover whether your thyroid has the iodine it needs.
Iodine is an essential trace element that the body cannot make itself. It is required for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, energy, growth, and temperature control. This blood test measures the level of iodine circulating in the serum, giving a direct indication of recent iodine intake and availability.
It is suitable for anyone concerned about dietary iodine sufficiency, including people following restrictive or plant-based diets, those with symptoms suggestive of thyroid dysfunction such as fatigue, weight changes, or feeling cold, and individuals with conditions affecting nutrient absorption. It can also be useful for monitoring iodine status during pregnancy or when taking iodine-containing supplements.
The test is performed on a simple blood sample using a validated analytical method to ensure accurate and reliable measurement.
Iodine Status
- Iodine (serum): measures the concentration of circulating iodine, reflecting recent dietary intake and the availability of this essential nutrient for thyroid hormone synthesis.
Why it matters
Iodine deficiency remains a global health concern and can lead to an enlarged thyroid (goitre), hypothyroidism, and impaired cognitive development in infants. Conversely, excessive iodine intake can also disrupt thyroid function. Measuring serum iodine helps identify insufficiency or excess, supporting informed dietary or clinical decisions. Results should be interpreted alongside thyroid function tests and discussed with your doctor.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
