sFlt-1 Blood Test | Pre-eclampsia Marker
Early warning for pre-eclampsia, protecting mother and baby.
The sFlt-1 blood test measures soluble Fms-like Tyrosine Kinase-1, a protein released by the placenta that can rise before the clinical signs of pre-eclampsia become apparent. This test is for pregnant women, typically in the second or third trimester, who are at increased risk of pre-eclampsia or who have symptoms or findings that raise clinical concern, such as new-onset hypertension, proteinuria, or fetal growth restriction. It provides an additional piece of information to help clinicians assess the likelihood of pre-eclampsia and guide appropriate monitoring and care.
Marker included
- Soluble Fms-like Tyrosine Kinase-1 (sFlt-1): a placental protein that binds vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF); elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia and may precede clinical onset.
Why it matters
Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that can affect both mother and baby. Identifying women at higher risk earlier allows closer surveillance, timely intervention, and better planning of delivery, which can reduce the risk of severe outcomes. The sFlt-1 result is interpreted alongside clinical findings and other tests, and should always be discussed with the managing obstetric team.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
