The Phospholipid IgA Antibody Test measures immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies directed against phospholipids, a group of fats that are essential components of cell membranes. These antibodies are part of the antiphospholipid antibody family and are associated with an increased risk of abnormal blood clotting (thrombosis) and pregnancy complications. This test is typically requested for patients with unexplained blood clots, recurrent miscarriage, or autoimmune conditions such as lupus, where antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is suspected. It may also be used when other antiphospholipid antibodies (such as lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin, or anti-beta-2-glycoprotein I) are negative but clinical suspicion remains high.

Why it matters
Identifying IgA-specific antiphospholipid antibodies can help explain otherwise unexplained thrombotic events or pregnancy losses, guiding further investigation and management. Early detection supports appropriate clinical care and informed decision-making for patients with suspected antiphospholipid syndrome.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
