This test measures immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies directed against phosphatidic acid, a phospholipid that forms part of cell membranes. It is used as part of the antiphospholipid screen, a group of tests that help identify an abnormal immune response to phospholipids. Such antibodies are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis (blood clots) and pregnancy complications. The test is typically requested for people with unexplained arterial or venous thrombosis, recurrent miscarriage, or other features suggestive of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). It may also be used in the investigation of certain autoimmune conditions. A simple blood sample is taken in the clinic.

Phospholipid Antibodies
- Phosphatidic acid IgM antibody (Anti-PA IgM)

Why it matters
Phosphatidic acid is one of several phospholipid targets in the antiphospholipid screen. The presence of IgM antibodies to phosphatidic acid can indicate an immune tendency towards clotting or pregnancy loss, although results must be interpreted alongside other antiphospholipid antibodies and the clinical picture. Identifying this antibody can help guide further investigation and management, particularly in people with recurrent thrombosis or unexplained pregnancy complications.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
