The Parvovirus B19 IgM Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect recent or acute infection with parvovirus B19. This test is particularly useful for individuals who are at risk of complications from parvovirus B19, such as pregnant women, people with certain blood disorders (e.g., sickle cell disease, thalassaemia), and those who are immunocompromised. It may also be requested for individuals presenting with symptoms suggestive of parvovirus B19 infection, including fever, rash, and joint pain.

Parvovirus B19 is a common virus that typically causes a mild illness known as fifth disease in children. While many infections are asymptomatic or mild, the virus can lead to more serious complications in certain groups. In pregnant women, infection can be transmitted to the fetus and may cause severe anaemia or miscarriage. In people with chronic haemolytic anaemias, parvovirus B19 can trigger a transient aplastic crisis. In immunocompromised individuals, it can cause persistent anaemia.

The test detects IgM antibodies, which are typically produced by the immune system shortly after infection and remain detectable for several weeks to months. The presence of IgM antibodies suggests a recent or acute infection.

Why it matters

Identifying a recent parvovirus B19 infection is crucial for managing at-risk individuals. For pregnant women, early detection allows for appropriate monitoring and potential intervention to reduce the risk of fetal complications. For those with blood disorders or weakened immune systems, confirming infection helps guide treatment and prevent severe outcomes. This test provides valuable information to support timely clinical decisions.
