Lyme Disease (Borrelia) Western Blot (IgG & IgM)
Confirm Lyme exposure with antibody-specific precision.
Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, a spirochaete transmitted through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. This Western Blot test detects IgG and IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Borrelia infection, providing a confirmatory analysis that distinguishes true exposure from cross-reactive screening results. It is suitable for patients with symptoms suggestive of Lyme disease, such as erythema migrans, fatigue, joint pain, neurological complaints, or cardiac symptoms, and for those with a history of tick exposure or a positive screening test who require clarification.
The assay uses Western Blot methodology, a technique that separates Borrelia proteins by molecular weight and identifies specific antibody binding patterns. This allows differentiation between early and late antibody responses and helps exclude false positives from other infections or autoimmune conditions.
Biomarkers Included
Borrelia burgdorferi IgG Antibodies
- Specific IgG bands (e.g. p18, p21, p28, p30, p39, p41, p45, p58, p66, p93)
Borrelia burgdorferi IgM Antibodies
- Specific IgM bands (e.g. p23, p39, p41)
Why it matters
Lyme disease can be challenging to diagnose because symptoms overlap with many other conditions, and standard screening tests may produce false positives. This Western Blot provides a highly specific confirmatory result, enabling you and your clinician to make informed decisions about treatment. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent progression to late-stage complications affecting the joints, nervous system, or heart. The test also helps differentiate active infection from past exposure, guiding appropriate antibiotic therapy and avoiding unnecessary treatment.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
