Lyme Disease (Borrelia) IgM Antibody Test
Detect early Lyme infection with targeted IgM antibody testing.
The Lyme Disease (Borrelia) IgM Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium transmitted through tick bites that causes Lyme disease. IgM antibodies are typically the first immunoglobulins to appear following infection, making this test particularly useful when early Lyme disease is suspected, often within the first few weeks after a tick bite or the onset of symptoms such as an expanding skin rash, fever, fatigue, headache, or joint aches.
This test is suitable for patients who have had a known or suspected tick exposure and are experiencing early symptoms consistent with Lyme disease, as well as for clinicians investigating a compatible clinical picture. It is not intended as a general screening test for asymptomatic individuals, and results should always be interpreted alongside clinical history and examination.
The test is performed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect Borrelia-specific IgM antibodies in a simple blood sample.

Why it matters
Early detection of Lyme disease allows timely antibiotic treatment, which significantly reduces the risk of progression to more serious complications affecting the joints, heart, or nervous system. The IgM antibody response is often the earliest serological indicator of infection, so this test can provide valuable diagnostic information during the early stages of illness when treatment is most effective. Understanding your Borrelia IgM status helps you and your doctor make informed decisions about further testing and management.
