The Lyme Disease (Borrelia) IgG Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. This test is suitable for individuals who have experienced symptoms suggestive of Lyme disease, such as an expanding rash (erythema migrans), fever, headache, fatigue, or joint pain, particularly if they live in or have visited areas where tick-borne infections are common. It is also useful for those who have been bitten by a tick and wish to assess whether past exposure has occurred. IgG antibodies typically appear several weeks after infection and can remain detectable for months or years, making this test most informative for later-stage or past exposure rather than very early infection.

The test uses a standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to measure the presence and level of Borrelia-specific IgG antibodies in a simple blood sample. Results are reported qualitatively or quantitatively, depending on the laboratory method, and should always be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and exposure history.

Why it matters

Lyme disease can cause a wide range of symptoms that may be mistaken for other conditions, and early detection supports timely treatment and better outcomes. This test provides objective evidence of past or current Borrelia exposure, helping you and your doctor determine whether further investigation or treatment is appropriate. It is particularly valuable for people with ongoing or unexplained symptoms following a tick bite, or for those who want clarity about their exposure status.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
