Liver Kidney Microsomal (LKM) Antibodies Test
Pinpoint autoimmune liver attack with precision antibody testing.
The Liver Kidney Microsomal (LKM) Antibodies Test is a specialised blood test used to detect autoantibodies directed against microsomal antigens found in the liver and kidneys. These antibodies are strongly associated with autoimmune hepatitis, particularly type 2, and can also be seen in some cases of drug-induced liver injury and chronic hepatitis C infection. This test is typically requested for patients with unexplained elevated liver enzymes, suspected autoimmune liver disease, or those being evaluated for chronic liver conditions. It is also useful in monitoring disease activity and guiding treatment decisions in known autoimmune hepatitis.
The test detects liver-kidney microsomal (LKM) antibodies in the blood. Results are interpreted alongside the patient’s clinical history, other autoantibody findings, and liver function tests to support clinical assessment and diagnosis.
Why it matters
Identifying LKM antibodies helps distinguish autoimmune hepatitis from other forms of liver disease, enabling timely and appropriate immunosuppressive treatment. Early diagnosis can prevent progression to cirrhosis and liver failure, making this test a vital tool in the management of autoimmune liver conditions.
