Leishmania (Leishmaniasis) Antibodies Test
Pinpoint the parasite behind persistent fever and skin lesions.
The Leishmania (Leishmaniasis) Antibodies Test is a serological blood test used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Leishmania species, a group of protozoan parasites transmitted through the bite of infected sandflies. This test is intended for individuals who present with symptoms suggestive of leishmaniasis, such as prolonged fever, weight loss, enlarged spleen or liver, skin ulcers, or mucosal lesions, particularly following travel to or residence in endemic regions including parts of the Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa, South and Central America, and Asia. It is also useful for immunocompromised patients in whom the infection may present atypically.
The test employs an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect specific IgG antibodies against Leishmania. While antibody detection supports the diagnosis of visceral and cutaneous forms, it cannot distinguish between past and active infection, and results should always be interpreted alongside clinical findings and other laboratory investigations.

Why it matters
Leishmaniasis can range from self-limiting skin ulcers to life-threatening visceral disease if left untreated. Early and accurate detection guides timely antiparasitic therapy, reduces the risk of severe complications such as splenic rupture or secondary infections, and helps prevent unnecessary treatments for other conditions. For travellers and immunocompromised individuals, this test provides a crucial piece of the diagnostic puzzle, supporting informed clinical decisions and better patient outcomes.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
