Legionella (Legionnaires' Disease) IgG Antibody Test
Pinpoint past Legionella exposure with a single antibody test.
Legionella is a genus of bacteria found naturally in freshwater environments such as lakes, rivers, and man-made water systems including cooling towers, hot tubs, and air conditioning units. When contaminated water droplets are inhaled, the bacteria can cause Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia, or a milder flu-like illness known as Pontiac fever. This test detects IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a Legionella infection, helping to confirm whether you have been exposed to the bacteria. It is particularly useful for patients who have experienced unexplained respiratory symptoms, those who have been in environments with potential Legionella contamination, or individuals requiring retrospective assessment of exposure. The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure specific IgG antibodies in a simple blood sample.
What this test screens for
- Legionella IgG antibodies: Indicates past or recent exposure to Legionella bacteria. A positive result suggests the immune system has encountered the bacteria, though it does not confirm active infection on its own.
Why it matters
Legionnaires' disease can be severe and is often underdiagnosed because its symptoms mimic other types of pneumonia. Identifying Legionella exposure helps clinicians determine whether targeted antibiotic therapy is needed, supports public health investigations into potential sources of contamination, and provides clarity for patients with persistent or unexplained respiratory symptoms. Early detection and appropriate treatment significantly improve outcomes.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
