LE Cell Test (Lupus Erythematosus Cell)
Classic marker for lupus and drug-induced lupus.
The LE Cell Test (Lupus Erythematosus Cell) is a blood test used to support the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related autoimmune conditions. It is most often requested when a patient has symptoms that could suggest lupus, such as persistent joint pain, unexplained skin rashes, fatigue, fever, or involvement of multiple organ systems. It may also be used to help distinguish lupus from other connective tissue diseases and to investigate possible drug-induced lupus.
This test is for adults and children who are being investigated for suspected autoimmune disease, and for those who need additional information when other initial tests are inconclusive. It is not a screening test for the general population and is interpreted alongside the patient's clinical history, physical examination, and other laboratory findings.
What the test measures
- The LE Cell Test looks for a specific type of cell, called an LE cell, that can form in the blood of some people with lupus.
- LE cells are a historical but still recognised marker of autoimmunity directed against the cell nucleus.
- The presence of LE cells supports a diagnosis of SLE or drug-induced lupus, but it is not specific to lupus alone and can occasionally be found in other autoimmune conditions.
- A negative result does not exclude lupus, and a positive result does not confirm it on its own.
Why it matters
Lupus is a complex condition that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and nervous system. Identifying it early allows for appropriate monitoring and treatment to reduce flares, protect organs, and improve long-term outcomes. The LE Cell Test provides a useful piece of the diagnostic picture, particularly when combined with clinical assessment and other autoimmune tests. It can also help identify drug-induced lupus, where stopping the responsible medication often leads to improvement.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
