Hepatitis D, also known as delta hepatitis, is a unique viral infection that can only occur in people who are already infected with hepatitis B. The Hepatitis D (HDV) Antibodies Test is a targeted blood test used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the hepatitis D virus. It is primarily requested for individuals who are known to have chronic hepatitis B, as co-infection or superinfection with HDV can lead to more severe liver disease, faster progression to cirrhosis, and a higher risk of liver cancer. This test is also useful for monitoring patients with hepatitis B who experience sudden worsening of liver function or who are being evaluated for antiviral therapy.

The test is performed using a simple blood sample, which is analysed in the laboratory using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect the presence of HDV-specific antibodies. Results are typically available within a few working days and should be interpreted alongside other clinical and laboratory findings, including hepatitis B markers and liver function tests.

Biomarkers included

  • Hepatitis D (HDV) antibodies: Detects total antibodies (IgG and IgM) against the hepatitis D virus, indicating current or past infection.

Why it matters

Hepatitis D co-infection or superinfection in individuals with hepatitis B is associated with a significantly increased risk of rapid liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Identifying HDV antibodies helps clinicians confirm exposure, guide treatment decisions, and implement appropriate monitoring for liver complications. Early detection can also inform public health measures and prevent further transmission. This test provides essential information for the effective management of patients with hepatitis B and suspected delta hepatitis.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
