Glutathione Total (GSH) Test
Measure your body's master antioxidant defence.
The Glutathione Total (GSH) Test measures the total amount of glutathione in your blood, giving a direct picture of your body's principal antioxidant defence system. Glutathione is a small molecule made from three amino acids (cysteine, glycine and glutamate) and is present in virtually every cell. It plays a central role in neutralising free radicals, supporting detoxification in the liver, maintaining immune function and protecting proteins and DNA from oxidative damage. This test is suitable for anyone concerned about oxidative stress, chronic fatigue, liver health, or the impact of long-term exposure to toxins, alcohol, certain medications or a nutrient-poor diet. It is also used by clinicians investigating conditions linked to depleted antioxidant capacity, such as chronic inflammatory disorders, neurodegenerative disease and age-related decline.
What is measured
- Total glutathione (GSH): the combined pool of reduced (active) and oxidised (GSSG) glutathione in the sample, reported as a total concentration. This reflects the overall availability of glutathione rather than the ratio between its two forms.
Why it matters
Glutathione is often described as the body's master antioxidant because it is involved in so many protective processes. Low levels have been associated with increased oxidative stress, poorer liver detoxification, reduced immune resilience and faster cellular ageing. Because the body's demand for glutathione rises with illness, stress, poor nutrition and toxin exposure, measuring total GSH can help you and your clinician understand whether your antioxidant defences are keeping pace. A simple blood sample is all that is required, and results are best interpreted alongside your symptoms, lifestyle and other clinical findings by your doctor.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
