The FTA-Abs IgG (Syphilis) Test is a treponemal antibody assay used to confirm exposure to Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. It is typically requested as a confirmatory test following a reactive screening result (such as a treponemal EIA or RPR/VDRL), or when a clinician needs a highly specific treponemal antibody result to support a diagnosis. The test uses an indirect immunofluorescence technique to detect IgG antibodies directed against T. pallidum, providing a sensitive and specific method for identifying past or present infection.

This test is suitable for:

  • Confirming a reactive syphilis screening test.
  • Investigating suspected primary, secondary, or latent syphilis.
  • Supporting sexual health screening in individuals with risk factors.
  • Monitoring known contacts of confirmed cases.
  • Clarifying discordant serology results when clinical suspicion remains.

What it screens for

  • FTA-Abs IgG (Syphilis): Detects IgG antibodies specific to Treponema pallidum. A reactive result indicates exposure to the bacterium at some point, whether recent or remote. Because treponemal antibodies typically remain detectable for life, this test cannot distinguish between active and treated infection on its own. It is therefore interpreted alongside clinical history, symptoms, and non-treponemal tests such as RPR or VDRL, which are used to assess disease activity and response to treatment.

Why it matters

Syphilis is a treatable infection, but if left undiagnosed it can progress to serious complications affecting the heart, brain, and other organs. Early detection through accurate confirmatory testing allows prompt treatment, prevents onward transmission, and protects long-term health. The FTA-Abs IgG test plays a key role in the diagnostic pathway by providing a reliable treponemal-specific result when screening tests are reactive or equivocal.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
