Cobalt Blood Test
Detect metal exposure before symptoms take hold.
The Cobalt Blood Test measures the level of cobalt in your bloodstream, providing a direct indication of recent exposure to this trace metal. Cobalt is widely used in industrial processes, including the production of superalloys for jet engines and gas turbines, hard-facing materials, pigments, batteries, and as a catalyst in the petrochemical industry. It is also a component of some medical implants, particularly metal-on-metal hip replacements, and certain vitamin B12 supplements. This test is suitable for anyone concerned about occupational exposure, patients with cobalt-containing implants experiencing unexplained symptoms, or individuals presenting with signs of cobalt toxicity such as cardiomyopathy, thyroid dysfunction, or peripheral neuropathy.
The test is performed using a simple blood sample, with analysis typically carried out by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), a highly sensitive technique capable of detecting trace metal concentrations.

Why it matters
Cobalt is an essential component of vitamin B12 and plays a role in normal cellular function, but excessive exposure can lead to serious health effects. Elevated blood cobalt levels may indicate overexposure from occupational sources, failing metal implants, or excessive supplementation. Symptoms of cobalt toxicity can include fatigue, tinnitus, visual disturbances, cardiomyopathy, and hypothyroidism. Early detection through blood testing allows for timely intervention, removal of the exposure source, and monitoring of chelation therapy if required. This test is particularly valuable for workers in high-risk industries, patients with metal-on-metal hip prostheses, and anyone experiencing unexplained symptoms potentially linked to cobalt exposure.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
