This test detects IgM antibodies against Chlamydia psittaci, the bacterium that causes psittacosis (also known as parrot fever or ornithosis). It is designed for people who develop flu-like symptoms, atypical pneumonia, or persistent respiratory illness after contact with birds, particularly pet birds, poultry, or wild birds. It is also useful for occupational health screening in bird handlers, veterinarians, pet shop staff, and laboratory workers.

IgM antibodies typically appear early in an infection, so this test is most helpful for identifying a recent or current infection. It is often requested alongside other tests to build a full clinical picture.

Chlamydia psittaci Serology
- Chlamydia psittaci IgM antibody: Detects IgM-class antibodies produced by the immune system shortly after exposure to Chlamydia psittaci. A positive result suggests recent or active infection and supports a diagnosis of psittacosis when combined with compatible symptoms and a history of bird contact.

Why it matters
Psittacosis can range from a mild flu-like illness to severe pneumonia, and it is easily missed because its symptoms overlap with many other respiratory infections. Identifying recent Chlamydia psittaci infection helps your doctor confirm the cause of your symptoms, choose the right treatment, and advise on any necessary follow-up. It also supports workplace risk assessments and timely public health action where bird-related exposure is a concern.
