Chlamydia psittaci IgG Antibody Test (bird-related)
Confirm past or current psittacosis exposure with confidence.
The Chlamydia psittaci IgG Antibody Test is a serological blood test used to detect IgG antibodies against Chlamydia psittaci, the bacterium responsible for psittacosis (also known as parrot fever or ornithosis). This test is intended for individuals who have had close contact with birds, particularly pet birds, poultry, or wild birds, and who may be experiencing symptoms consistent with psittacosis, such as fever, headache, dry cough, and pneumonia. It is also useful for occupational health screening in bird handlers, veterinarians, and laboratory workers.
The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect specific IgG antibodies in the blood. IgG antibodies typically appear later in infection and can persist for months or years, indicating past exposure or ongoing infection. A positive result should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical symptoms and exposure history.

Why it matters
Psittacosis can range from a mild flu-like illness to severe pneumonia, and it is often underdiagnosed because its symptoms overlap with other respiratory infections. Identifying IgG antibodies against Chlamydia psittaci helps confirm exposure, supports timely treatment with appropriate antibiotics, and informs public health measures to prevent further transmission from birds to humans. For at-risk occupations, this test provides valuable evidence of immune status and can guide workplace safety protocols.
