Chlamydia psittaci IgA Antibody Test (bird-related)
Pinpoint psittacosis with targeted IgA antibody testing.
Chlamydia psittaci is a bacterium carried by birds that can spread to humans, causing a respiratory infection known as psittacosis (also called ornithosis or parrot fever). This test detects IgA antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Chlamydia psittaci, helping to identify an active or recent infection. It is intended for people who keep or handle birds, such as pet owners, breeders, poultry workers, and veterinary staff, as well as anyone presenting with flu-like symptoms or atypical pneumonia following bird contact. The test uses a blood sample analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure specific IgA antibodies.
Biomarkers
- Chlamydia psittaci IgA antibody: screens for IgA-class antibodies against Chlamydia psittaci, which typically indicate an active or recent infection and can support diagnosis when combined with clinical history and other test results.
Why it matters
Psittacosis can range from mild flu-like illness to severe pneumonia, and it is easily missed because symptoms overlap with many other respiratory infections. Identifying Chlamydia psittaci IgA antibodies helps confirm exposure, guides appropriate antibiotic treatment, and supports timely public health measures to prevent further transmission from birds to humans.
