Chlamydia pneumoniae IgG Antibody Test (respiratory)
Trace past exposure to this common respiratory infection.
The Chlamydia pneumoniae IgG Antibody Test is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Chlamydia pneumoniae, a bacterium that commonly causes respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and atypical pneumonia. Unlike its namesake, Chlamydia pneumoniae is spread through respiratory droplets and is not a sexually transmitted infection.
This test is typically requested for patients who have had persistent or recurrent respiratory symptoms, or where a clinician suspects that a previous or ongoing Chlamydia pneumoniae infection may be contributing to their condition. It may also be used in the investigation of chronic respiratory illness or in research and occupational health contexts where evidence of past exposure is relevant.
The test uses an immunoassay method to detect and measure the level of Chlamydia pneumoniae-specific IgG antibodies in a simple blood sample. IgG antibodies generally appear several weeks after initial infection and can remain detectable for months or years, making this test most useful for identifying past exposure rather than diagnosing an active, acute infection. A positive result indicates that the immune system has encountered the bacterium at some point. Your doctor will interpret the result alongside your symptoms, medical history, and any other investigations.
Why it matters
Chlamydia pneumoniae is a frequent cause of community-acquired respiratory infections that can be difficult to distinguish from other causes based on symptoms alone. Identifying past exposure can help your clinician build a clearer picture of your respiratory health, rule out or confirm a potential contributor to chronic symptoms, and guide appropriate further assessment or management. Because IgG antibodies persist after infection resolves, this test provides valuable insight into your immune history with this organism, supporting more informed clinical decisions.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
