Chlamydia pneumoniae IgA Antibody Test (respiratory)
Detect past or persistent Chlamydia pneumoniae respiratory infection.
The Chlamydia pneumoniae IgA Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies directed against Chlamydia pneumoniae, a common cause of atypical respiratory tract infections. This test is typically requested for patients with persistent or recurrent respiratory symptoms, such as a chronic cough, wheezing, or bronchitis, where an ongoing or recent infection is suspected. It may also be used in the investigation of atypical pneumonia when routine cultures are negative, or as part of a broader respiratory or cardiovascular risk assessment in some clinical settings.
The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to measure the level of IgA antibodies in a simple blood sample. IgA antibodies are produced at mucosal surfaces and tend to rise during acute infection, then decline over weeks to months. Persistently elevated IgA levels may suggest a chronic or recurrent infection, although results must always be interpreted alongside clinical history and other diagnostic findings.

Why it matters
Chlamydia pneumoniae is a widespread respiratory pathogen that can cause prolonged or recurrent symptoms, and it has been associated with chronic respiratory conditions and, in some studies, with cardiovascular and neurological conditions. Identifying an active or persistent IgA response helps clinicians distinguish recent or ongoing infection from past exposure, guiding appropriate antibiotic treatment and further investigation. Because IgA antibodies reflect mucosal immune activity, this test can be particularly useful when symptoms persist despite initial treatment, or when standard cultures fail to identify a cause. Accurate detection supports timely management, reduces unnecessary antibiotic use, and helps prevent complications from untreated chronic infection.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
