Ceruloplasmin Test
Uncover the copper balance behind fatigue and tremor.
The Ceruloplasmin Test measures the level of ceruloplasmin, a copper-carrying protein produced mainly in the liver, in a simple blood sample. It is used to investigate suspected disorders of copper metabolism, most notably Wilson's disease, and to help assess unexplained liver disease, neurological symptoms, or low circulating copper. It may also be requested when a clinician suspects copper deficiency, which can arise from malabsorption, certain surgeries, or excessive zinc intake.
Ceruloplasmin is the main transport protein for copper in the blood and plays a role in iron metabolism. Because copper is essential for nerve function, bone health, and the activity of many enzymes, abnormal ceruloplasmin levels can point to a range of underlying conditions. Results are interpreted alongside clinical history, other copper studies, and additional liver or neurological investigations.
What this test screens for
- Ceruloplasmin: the copper-binding protein measured to assess copper status and support the investigation of Wilson's disease, copper deficiency, and some forms of liver or neurological disease.
Why it matters
Copper is a trace element that the body cannot do without, yet too much or too little can cause serious harm. Measuring ceruloplasmin gives clinicians an early clue to disorders of copper metabolism, helping to guide timely diagnosis and treatment before complications such as liver damage or neurological impairment progress. Whether you are being investigated for unexplained liver problems, movement symptoms, or a possible nutritional deficiency, this test provides a vital piece of the diagnostic picture.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
