The Cardiolipin Antibodies IgG Test is a specialised blood test used to detect immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies directed against cardiolipin, a phospholipid found in cell membranes. These antibodies belong to the family of antiphospholipid antibodies and are a key laboratory criterion for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), an autoimmune condition that predisposes individuals to abnormal blood clotting (thrombosis) and recurrent pregnancy loss.

This test is typically requested for patients who have experienced unexplained arterial or venous thrombosis, recurrent miscarriage, or other clinical features suggestive of APS. It may also be ordered alongside other antiphospholipid tests, such as lupus anticoagulant and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein I antibodies, to provide a comprehensive assessment. The test uses a validated immunoassay technique to measure the concentration of cardiolipin IgG antibodies in the blood.

Biomarkers included

Antiphospholipid Antibodies
- Cardiolipin antibodies IgG (aCL IgG)

Why it matters
Identifying elevated cardiolipin IgG antibodies is essential for diagnosing antiphospholipid syndrome, which carries significant risks of thrombosis and pregnancy complications. Early detection allows healthcare professionals to initiate appropriate monitoring and treatment strategies, such as anticoagulation therapy, to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events and improve pregnancy outcomes. This test provides critical information that can guide clinical management and help prevent potentially life-threatening complications.
