Cardiolipin Antibodies IgA Test
Pinpoint an overlooked antibody behind clotting and pregnancy loss.
The Cardiolipin Antibodies IgA Test measures immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies directed against cardiolipin, a phospholipid found in cell membranes. It is used alongside other antiphospholipid tests to investigate an abnormal tendency to form blood clots (thrombosis), recurrent miscarriage, or unexplained thrombocytopenia, and to help diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). It may also be requested in people with autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or in those being monitored for APS. The test is performed on a simple blood sample using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the standard analytical method for cardiolipin antibody detection.
What the test screens for
- Cardiolipin antibodies (IgA): IgA-class autoantibodies that bind to cardiolipin. Their presence can indicate an antiphospholipid antibody, which is associated with an increased risk of arterial or venous thrombosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, and, less commonly, low platelet counts. IgA cardiolipin antibodies are sometimes the only antiphospholipid antibody present, so testing this class can add valuable information when IgG and IgM results are negative but clinical suspicion remains.
Why it matters
A positive IgA cardiolipin result can help explain otherwise unexplained clotting events or recurrent miscarriage and guide further investigation for antiphospholipid syndrome. Because antiphospholipid antibodies can fluctuate and are not specific on their own, results are interpreted by your doctor alongside your clinical history, other antiphospholipid tests (lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin IgG and IgM, and anti-beta-2-glycoprotein I antibodies), and, where appropriate, repeat testing to confirm persistence.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
