Calcium Test
The essential mineral for strong bones and steady nerves.
The Calcium Test measures the level of calcium in your blood. Calcium is a vital mineral that supports bone health, muscle contraction, nerve signalling, and blood clotting. This test is commonly requested when your doctor needs to investigate symptoms such as muscle cramps, tingling, fatigue, or bone pain, or to monitor conditions affecting the parathyroid glands, kidneys, or bones. It is also used to screen for abnormal calcium levels in people with certain cancers or those taking medications that influence calcium balance.
Who is this test for?
- Individuals with symptoms of low calcium (muscle spasms, tingling in fingers or around the mouth, confusion) or high calcium (excessive thirst, frequent urination, bone pain, kidney stones).
- Patients being investigated for parathyroid, bone, or kidney disorders.
- Those with a history of thyroid surgery or certain cancers.
- People taking vitamin D, calcium supplements, or medications such as diuretics or lithium.
What is included?
- Total calcium: measures both free and protein-bound calcium in the blood.
Why it matters
Calcium is essential for many bodily functions. Abnormal levels can indicate underlying conditions such as hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, or certain malignancies. Early detection helps your doctor determine the right course of action and prevent complications like osteoporosis, kidney stones, or cardiac arrhythmias.
- Total calcium
No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
