The Anti-La (SS-B) Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect antibodies directed against the La/SS-B antigen, a ribonucleoprotein involved in RNA processing. It is most commonly requested alongside other autoimmune markers when evaluating patients with suspected Sjögren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or other connective tissue diseases. It is also useful in confirming the diagnosis and assessing disease activity in patients with known autoimmune conditions, particularly when dry eyes, dry mouth, or other sicca symptoms are present.

Marker included
- Anti-La (SS-B) antibody: screens for autoantibodies against the La/SS-B antigen, which are frequently found in Sjögren's syndrome (often together with anti-Ro/SS-A antibodies) and less commonly in SLE and other autoimmune disorders.

Who this test is for
This test may be appropriate for individuals with symptoms suggestive of an autoimmune condition, such as persistent dry eyes or dry mouth, joint pain, unexplained fatigue, or skin rashes. It can also be used to support the diagnostic workup when other autoimmune markers are positive or when a clinician wishes to monitor known anti-La antibody status.

Why it matters
Detecting anti-La (SS-B) antibodies can help clarify the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome and related connective tissue diseases, supporting earlier specialist referral and more targeted management. It provides valuable information for clinicians assessing autoimmune risk and can guide decisions about monitoring and treatment.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
