Service Description
Biomarkers Blood Group: -- ABO -- Rh Haemoglobin Genotype -- Sickle Cell status -- Thalassemia status Sample: BLOOD Results: Same Day Phlebotomy fee: £0 The ABO type plus Rh blood group test determines an individual's blood type based on the presence or absence of certain antigens on the surface of red blood cells. The test determines both the ABO blood type (A, B, AB, or O) and the Rh factor (positive or negative). Haemoglobin is a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. Your haemoglobin genotype refers to the specific genes you inherit from your parents that determine the type of haemoglobin you have. Most people have a normal haemoglobin genotype (HbAA), which produces healthy haemoglobin. Some people inherit abnormal haemoglobin genes, which can lead to conditions like sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) or thalassemia. Importance: -- safe blood transfusion -- pregnancy safety and management -- genetic compatibility -- avoid health risks of offspring (sickle cell, thalassemia etc)
