Varicella Immunity Test
Know your chickenpox and shingles immunity status.
The Varicella Immunity Test is for anyone who needs to confirm whether they are protected against the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the virus that causes chickenpox and can later reactivate as shingles. It is particularly useful for healthcare workers, teachers, nursery staff, carers, and anyone starting a new role where immunity screening is required. It is also helpful for adults who are unsure whether they had chickenpox as a child, for people planning pregnancy, and for those who are immunocompromised or about to start immunosuppressive treatment. A simple blood sample is taken by a trained phlebotomist, and the results show whether you have evidence of past infection or vaccination, or whether you remain susceptible.
The test measures two types of antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus:
Varicella-Zoster Virus Antibodies
- Varicella-Zoster Virus IgM: A marker that can indicate a recent or current infection with the virus.
- Varicella-Zoster Virus IgG: A marker that shows whether you have antibodies from a past infection or vaccination, which is the key indicator of immunity.
If you are unsure whether you have had chickenpox or been vaccinated, this test provides a clear answer. It is also a common requirement for occupational health clearance in roles where exposure to vulnerable people is possible.
Why it matters
Knowing your varicella immunity status helps you and your employer or clinician make informed decisions. If you are not immune, vaccination can be arranged to protect you and those around you. If you are already immune, you can have peace of mind and avoid unnecessary vaccination. For pregnant women or those with weakened immune systems, establishing immunity is especially important because chickenpox can be more severe in these groups. This test gives you a definitive answer so you can take the right next step with confidence.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
