Toxoplasma gondii IgM Antibody Test
Clarify recent or past Toxoplasma exposure with confidence.
The Toxoplasma gondii IgM Antibody Test is a single-analyte blood test used to detect IgM-class antibodies directed against the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is most often requested when a clinician needs to establish whether an infection is recent, particularly in groups where timing matters: pregnant women, individuals who are immunocompromised, and people with unexplained flu-like illness, lymphadenopathy, or visual symptoms suggestive of ocular involvement. It is also used as part of a broader infection screen in patients being prepared for immunosuppressive therapy or transplantation.
IgM antibodies are the earliest antibody class to appear after primary infection and typically decline over weeks to months, so their presence can help distinguish a recent exposure from one acquired in the more distant past. Because IgM can occasionally persist for many months, and because non-specific reactivity can occur, this test is best interpreted alongside clinical history and, where appropriate, additional antibody testing such as IgG and IgG avidity. Your clinician will explain what your result means in the context of your symptoms, pregnancy status, and exposure history.
Markers included
Toxoplasma serology
- Toxoplasma gondii IgM antibody: detects IgM-class antibodies indicating recent or ongoing immune response to T. gondii.
Why it matters
Toxoplasmosis is usually mild in healthy adults, but timing of infection is critical in pregnancy, where primary infection can be transmitted to the fetus, and in immunocompromised patients, where reactivation can cause serious neurological or systemic disease. A clear IgM result helps clinicians decide whether further investigation, monitoring, or treatment is needed, and supports informed conversations about exposure risk, prevention, and pregnancy or immunosuppression planning.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
