RBC Folate Test
True cellular folate status, not just a snapshot.
The RBC Folate Test measures the concentration of folate inside your red blood cells, giving a reliable picture of your body's folate stores over the preceding three to four months. Unlike a serum folate measurement, which reflects only recent dietary intake and can fluctuate day to day, red cell folate is a stable, long-term indicator of true tissue status. This test is particularly useful for anyone with a diet low in leafy green vegetables, fortified cereals, and legumes, or for those with conditions that impair folate absorption such as coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, or chronic alcohol use. It is also valuable for women planning pregnancy, as adequate folate is essential for preventing neural tube defects in the developing baby. The test is performed on a simple blood sample using a validated laboratory immunoassay method.
Why it matters
Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B9) that plays a critical role in DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and the metabolism of homocysteine. A deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia, causing fatigue, weakness, and difficulty concentrating. Low folate during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Because serum folate can be normal even when tissue stores are depleted, the RBC Folate Test provides a more accurate assessment of true deficiency. Identifying low red cell folate allows you and your doctor to take timely action through dietary changes or supplementation, protecting your energy levels, neurological function, and pregnancy outcomes.
