LDL Cholesterol Test
Know your true heart risk beyond total cholesterol.
The LDL Cholesterol Test measures the concentration of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your blood, often referred to as 'bad' cholesterol. This test is for anyone who wants to assess their cardiovascular risk, monitor the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering treatment, or investigate an inherited lipid disorder. It is particularly useful for individuals with a family history of early heart disease, those with existing risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, and anyone taking statins or other lipid-modifying therapy.
What is measured
- LDL cholesterol: the primary carrier of cholesterol in the blood and a key driver of atherosclerotic plaque formation.
Why it matters
Elevated LDL cholesterol is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Unlike total cholesterol, LDL gives a direct picture of the atherogenic burden on your arteries. Knowing your LDL level allows you and your doctor to take timely action through lifestyle changes or medication, and to track whether your current treatment is achieving the recommended target for your risk profile.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
