Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a hormone produced mainly by the liver in response to growth hormone (GH). Because GH is released in pulses throughout the day, a single GH measurement can be misleading. IGF-1, by contrast, remains relatively stable in the bloodstream, making it a reliable and practical marker for assessing growth hormone activity over time.

This test is used to investigate suspected growth hormone excess or deficiency, to monitor conditions affecting the pituitary gland, and to support the management of patients with known growth hormone disorders. It is also helpful in evaluating delayed or abnormal growth in children and adolescents, and in assessing pituitary function in adults presenting with symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, changes in body composition, or altered glucose metabolism.

A simple blood sample is collected by a trained phlebotomist, and the sample is analysed in the laboratory using an immunoassay method to measure circulating IGF-1 levels.

Biomarkers included

  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)

Why it matters

IGF-1 provides a stable and integrated view of growth hormone activity, helping clinicians identify hormonal imbalances that may otherwise go unnoticed. Whether investigating growth concerns in a child, evaluating pituitary function in an adult, or monitoring an existing diagnosis, IGF-1 testing offers clear, actionable insight that supports timely and appropriate clinical decisions.

  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
