HTLV (Human T-Lymphotropic Virus) Antibodies Test
Know your HTLV status with a single, definitive blood test.
The HTLV (Human T-Lymphotropic Virus) Antibodies Test is a targeted blood test that screens for antibodies against the human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II. It is intended for individuals who may have been exposed to HTLV through sexual contact, blood transfusion, sharing of needles, or from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding, as well as for those who are asymptomatic but wish to confirm their status. The test is also valuable for people with unexplained neurological symptoms, certain blood disorders, or a history of residence in or travel to regions where HTLV is more common, such as parts of Japan, the Caribbean, South America, and sub-Saharan Africa. Testing is performed using a simple blood sample, and the analytical method employed is typically an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) to detect HTLV-specific antibodies, with confirmation by Western blot or line immunoassay if required.

Why it matters
Knowing your HTLV status is important because the virus can remain silent for decades while still being transmissible to others. Early detection allows you to take steps to protect partners and family members, and it enables appropriate monitoring for potential long-term complications such as adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma or HTLV-associated myelopathy. A negative result provides peace of mind, while a positive result allows you and your doctor to plan the right follow-up and care.
