HTLV-1 PCR Blood Test
Confirm HTLV-1 infection with direct viral detection.
This test detects HTLV-1 proviral DNA in a blood sample to confirm or monitor infection with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1. It is intended for individuals with reactive HTLV-1 antibody screening results, those with risk factors for infection, and patients requiring confirmation of infection status. The test is also used to assess viral presence in people with clinical features suggestive of HTLV-1-associated disease, such as adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma or HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM/TSP).
Markers included
- HTLV-1 DNA: detects the presence of HTLV-1 genetic material in the blood, providing direct evidence of infection.
Why it matters
HTLV-1 is a retrovirus that can cause serious long-term conditions, including adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma and a progressive neurological disorder known as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM/TSP). Confirming infection with a direct viral detection test helps distinguish true infection from a false-reactive antibody screen, guides clinical management, and informs counselling for individuals and their families. Early and accurate identification supports appropriate monitoring and access to specialist care.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
