Hepatitis D PCR Test (HDV RNA)
Confirm active hepatitis D infection and guide antiviral treatment.
This test detects and quantifies hepatitis D virus (HDV) RNA in the blood to confirm active infection and assess viral load. It is intended for individuals with known or suspected hepatitis D, particularly those co-infected with hepatitis B, and for monitoring response to antiviral therapy. Hepatitis D is a defective virus that requires hepatitis B to replicate, so co-infection or superinfection can accelerate liver disease progression.
Marker included
- Hepatitis D virus RNA (HDV RNA): indicates active HDV replication and helps determine viral load.
Why it matters
Identifying active HDV infection is essential for accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decisions. Early detection and monitoring can help reduce the risk of rapid liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, and support timely access to specialist care.
