The Gliadin IgG Antibodies Test is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies directed against gliadin, a component of gluten. It is most helpful for people who have already removed gluten from their diet and want to explore whether gluten may be contributing to their symptoms, or for those whose other coeliac screening tests have been inconclusive. Because IgG gliadin antibodies can remain detectable for longer after gluten withdrawal than some other markers, this test can offer useful information when a standard coeliac screen is negative but symptoms persist.

This test is not a first-line diagnostic test for coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is best assessed with tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA antibodies alongside total IgA, while the person is still eating gluten. The Gliadin IgG test is therefore best interpreted as part of a wider clinical picture, and results should always be discussed with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.

What is measured

Gliadin Antibodies
- Gliadin IgG antibodies: detects IgG-class antibodies against gliadin, a protein fraction of wheat gluten. Raised levels may be seen in coeliac disease, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, and occasionally in other conditions. This marker is particularly useful when IgA deficiency is present or when gluten has already been reduced in the diet.

Why it matters
Persistent digestive symptoms, fatigue, bloating, or unexplained nutritional deficiencies can have many causes, and gluten-related conditions are among them. The Gliadin IgG Antibodies Test provides an additional piece of the puzzle, especially when standard screening has not given a clear answer. Understanding your antibody status can help you and your doctor decide whether further investigation, such as referral to a gastroenterologist or a supervised gluten challenge, is appropriate. It can also support a more informed conversation about whether a gluten-free diet is likely to be beneficial for you.
