The Gliadin IgA Antibodies Test measures the level of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies directed against gliadin, a component of gluten. This test is typically used as part of the investigation of coeliac disease and other gluten-related disorders, particularly in individuals who are experiencing symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or anaemia. It may also be requested for those with a family history of coeliac disease or other autoimmune conditions. The test is performed on a simple blood sample using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect and quantify gliadin-specific IgA antibodies.

Gliadin IgA Antibodies
- Gliadin IgA antibodies: screens for elevated levels of IgA antibodies against gliadin, which can indicate an immune response to gluten and may suggest coeliac disease or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity.

Why it matters
Persistent or unexplained symptoms related to gluten consumption can significantly affect quality of life. Identifying elevated gliadin IgA antibodies provides an important clue for clinicians when evaluating possible gluten-related disorders. Early detection can guide further testing, dietary management, and specialist referral, helping to prevent long-term complications such as nutritional deficiencies and intestinal damage.
