Female Fertility Check II
Assess ovarian reserve and key fertility hormones.
This check looks at four further hormones that play an important role in fertility and reproductive health, building on the core menstrual cycle hormones. Together they give insight into your ovarian reserve, thyroid function, and other hormonal factors that can affect ovulation, your cycle, and your ability to conceive. It works well as a complement to a core hormone check, giving a broader picture of the factors influencing your fertility.
What this check measures
- Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH): a marker of ovarian reserve, giving an indication of the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It is widely used to help assess fertility potential and to guide fertility treatment such as IVF
- Prolactin (PRL): a hormone that, when raised, can interfere with ovulation and cause irregular or absent periods, so it is useful in investigating cycle and fertility problems
- TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone): checks thyroid function, as both an underactive and overactive thyroid can disrupt the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and fertility
- Testosterone: although present in smaller amounts in women, raised levels can affect the cycle and are relevant in conditions such as PCOS
A note on timing
Unlike the core cycle hormones, AMH is stable throughout the menstrual cycle and can be measured on any day, which makes this check more flexible to arrange. Testosterone is best measured in the morning, when levels are highest. Please follow any timing guidance provided so your results are as reliable as possible.
Why it matters
These hormones add valuable depth to a fertility assessment, helping to identify factors such as reduced ovarian reserve, a thyroid imbalance, or a hormonal cause of irregular cycles. Results are best understood alongside your core cycle hormones and your wider health, so any findings are best discussed with your GP or a fertility specialist, who can interpret them in context and advise on next steps.
- Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH)
- Prolactin (PRL)
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Testosterone
No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
